The short answer
Check how your employer coverage works with Medicare before delaying enrollment. Employer size, current employment and the kind of coverage matter.
Ask the benefits administrator first
Find out which coverage pays first and whether your current plan requires Medicare enrollment. Ask separately whether prescription coverage is creditable. Keep the answer and your coverage notices.
Plan around the earlier deadline
For qualifying coverage based on current employment, the Part B special enrollment window generally ends eight months after employment or that coverage ends, whichever happens first. Drug-plan timing is different. Confirm both rather than assuming you have eight months for everything.
Check HSA contributions before applying
Enrollment in Medicare affects eligibility to contribute to a Health Savings Account. Medicare coverage can be retroactive. Review your contribution cutoff with Social Security and your benefits or tax adviser before applying.
A question worth asking
Does COBRA extend my Part B enrollment deadline?
No. Do not rely on COBRA to extend the special enrollment window based on current employment.
