Aflac and Medicare: understand the different roles

“Supplemental insurance” and “Medicare Supplement” are not interchangeable terms. Start with the coverage you already have.

Reviewed September 13, 2026 · Finwell.Health

Medicare is your health coverage

Review whether you have Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage, and what your current coverage pays. A supplemental accident or illness policy is not a replacement for either path.

Medigap has a specific job

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, is private coverage that helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare. It does not work with Medicare Advantage.

Aflac supplemental products have their own rules

The accident, cancer and critical illness products discussed in this guide pay according to their own covered events and benefit schedules. They are different from Medigap. Availability and eligibility must be checked for the specific product and state.

Check the official details

This guide is a starting point. Product availability, eligibility, benefits, premiums, limitations and exclusions vary by policy and state. The actual policy determines coverage.
